How the score works

Each area gets 1 to 5 points (5 is best) on nine criteria. The total out of 45 is converted to a score from 0 to 100 (total ÷ 45 × 100). All criteria carry equal weight. Click a criterion to see what it takes into account.

The scores from the original regional comparison were kept and split into provinces and districts: Asturias and Cantabria 34, Porto and Minho 33, Galicia 30, Girona 29, central Portugal and Alentejo 29 (points out of 45).

Water for Spain comes from a drought-risk map built from Spanish ministry reservoir and drought reports and climate projections. For Portugal it is my estimate, based on reservoir levels (77% nationally in September 2026) and the history of drought in the south. All other points are my own judgement from public sources, not measurements, so a difference of 1 to 2 points between neighbouring areas is not meaningful. Madeira, the Azores, Ceuta and Melilla are not rated.

Province and district outlines are generalised (Natural Earth, 1:10 million), so at street level they only roughly follow the real boundaries and the coastline of the satellite photo.

Scores are my estimates from public sources, not an official classification. Data as of 11 October 2026. Check the details with local authorities before buying property.
